Saturday

Hi! It is Saturday, 7:45AM. Was up at 5AM. Time change+Ruth=0 sleep. The beach house here is gorgeous. Unfortunately doesn’t look like I can run here though as the beach is very rocky and we are on a highway. Everyone is here now and this afternoon I hope to do some browsing at the fab Qualicum stores. Tonight there are I think 50 of us meeting for dinner, and then we are going to a bonfire on the beach. Hopefully we get to go if the kids aren’t too tired. I miss Gus, which surprises me, I didn’t realize how attached I was. I will blog again soon…

Flying

So here I am sitting at the airport thinking you should never fly with Kevin or I. As usual, I timed it beautifully. We arrived at the gate 5 minutes before boarding, even had time to get food for the kids. And then, as usual, they announce that our plane is delayed due to lightning. We are the only people that have flights delayed every time we fly, even during summer. Sigh. Then we sat down to relax and Kevin pointed out Chris Neil travelling with his family. Very cute baby girl. So I gathered the kids and we said hi and he signed autographs. He was sooooo nice, I was very impressed. Smiled a lot and chatted with the kids. Then we came back to sit down and Kevin said, hey you should have taken a picture. I was too embarrassed to bug him again though, so we settled for the written word. Our plane is boarding now and he is actually even on our flight. No Wade sightings though – sigh.

Okay – finally posting this from our hotel room in BC – 1am Ottawa time.

Mini Ruth

I have been blogging about Jakob a lot and I hate for you to feel that Rachel isn’t equally entertaining. Here is a caption of Rachel’s morning. She woke up at 6:30 and came to see me so I could do her hair. Her and her brother are going to camp today and it is swimming day. She asked me if they need to wear their camp shirts. So I brought her down to the fridge where I keep the schedule and list of things needed for each camp day. I said it doesn’t list the shirt so don’t worry about it. And then I said goodbye and left for work. When I got to work there was a call on my cell phone from Rachel (have I mentioned she is 8 years old?) She wanted to know if her brother had to wear his glasses to camp today, she was pretty sure he didn’t, but could I confirm. At this point Kevin got on the phone, and chuckled while I told Rachel that no, Jakob didn’t need his glasses today and thanks for checking. Then she asked me if he would need a life jacket as the list said life jacket but she thought he swam well enough now that he probably wouldn’t need it. I said that I had already discussed with Dad that he should bring the life jacket just in case but that I too thought he wouldn’t need it this summer. Then she said goodbye. Kevin stayed on the phone to tell me that when he got out of the shower earlier she had both her and her brother dressed and had their bags packed with all their swim stuff (towel, bathing suit, spare underwear etc). She had even prepared breakfast for her and Jake. We both chuckled and I said it was reassuring to know that someone was running things while I was at work :-) .

My six year old is smarter than me

So another great conversation with my hysterical 6 year old. We were eating lunch yesterday and we play this Pokemon game where he asks us to pronounce the names of his favourite characters. Well yesterday he added a twist and asked us to spell them. So he said Mom, spell Bideuf. So I spelled it the way I just wrote it. He said no that is wrong. So Kevin took a stab and also spelled it wrong. Jakob said it is B-i-d-o-o-f. Well then we said Jake that is Bid-ooof not Bid-euf. (This story may be better told orally, mental note for next blog.) Then Kevin gave him the example that oo makes the sound like in the word goof. And Jakob countered, really? Then what about the word foot. Just like Bidoof. You just can’t argue with that kind of logic.

Sunday

Last night we went to an amazing Italian restaurant called Il Piccolino on Preston Street with friends. It was wonderful. We sat outside and it was shady and breezy and very atmospheric. The food was wonderful and quite reasonable. I had a yummy caesar salad, followed by a shrimp pasta and ridiculous sorbet for dessert. So good! And great company too. This morning I dragged myself out of bed at 6:15am to go for a 5km run, then rushed off to a tennis lesson. When I got home we took the family and Gus to Bruce Pit to burn some of that Airedale energy. It was a really nice walk but now I am pooped. We just had lunch and now I really have to ice Jake’s birthday cake. In my mind it will be a stunning ode to a golf course, something a la Pebble Beach…but in reality I hope it will be distinguishable as a golf course and not just a green mess. Must get to it…birthday party is at 4pm.

Incredible Hulk

Really another Hulk movie? Did we really need another? Eric Bana was a fine hulk…well anyhow, I went to see it tonight. It was pretty hysterical…not sure if that is what the makers intended. The biggest source of amusement was watching to see what happened to his pants each time he hulked out. He went from a size 30 to a size 130 and amazingly his pants stayed on. His shirt, shoes, watch, hat all ripped off immediately, but his pants managed to make it through. There were a few comments during the movie that they were stretchy, but amazingly, when he went back to normal they never snapped back into shape, but stayed Hulk-size. I also loved how dumb they thought the viewers were, like the Hulk was Mr Green – because he is green guys! and Mr Blue wore a blue sweater and shirt so you couldn’t possibly get confused. Really the only things that made the movie worthwhile for me were:

1 – Liv Tyler – is there anyone more beautiful? She is just so real, and fresh and down to earth. I find she is what they were describing when they describe Snow White, but she is prettier than the disney version. I have loved her ever since she was all gangly and unsure in Stealing Beauty, and elf-like and ethereal as Arwen. I wish she would make a better movie…am I the only one who thinks she is amazing (get the aerosmith reference???)

2 – Iron Man’s cameo at the end – hello Robert Downey Jr!! He just lights up the whole screen with his brilliance, hotness and pure charisma. I know, he only had two lines but they just showed why the Hulk will never compare to Iron Man. Maybe RDJ and LT could do a flick together?

And lastly, seriously there was a woman with a little kid there, so little he still had a soother in his mouth. Who does that?

What have I been doing since we last spoke?

So most of the comments I have gotten from my friends are “are you kidding me? you have time for a blog?” Well…I guess I am not sure how often I have to update this. Once a day I can probably fit in most days…more than that, forget it. I really have no idea what I am doing but that seems to be a common theme in my life lately. Here is a snapshot of what has happened since I last wrote. Picked up kids from school. Registered Rachel for dance next year (remember when dance cost $300 a year?). Bought items to make loot bags for Jake’s birthday party. Got rained on. Came home. Made supper, fed kids, husband and self. Watched just-picked-up-at-registration dance dvds (3) with kids. Put kids to bed. Cleaned kitchen. Baked banana bread for kids’ school. Cleaned kitchen again. Made loot bags. Tired so went to bed. Remembered that I needed to cut up banana bread and put out on tray for tomorrow. Got up, went back downstairs and cut into banana bread. Banana bread not cooked inside :-( . Very sad. Called husband to taste banana bread to see if it was salvageable as something other than banana bread, like banana chewy squares or something. Husband grossed out by banana bread. Threw banana bread in garbage. Went to sleep. Woke up with dog, let him out, fed him breakfast. Fed fish breakfast. Completed 5km run while catching up on an old Felicity episode (season 2 ep 13). Showered, helped get kids out the door for last day of school. Ran to grocery store to buy fruit tray to replace banana bread. Dropped fruit tray at school and tried not to feel like sad, pathetic mother who doesn’t bring in home baked goods for these things. Came home. Worked. Got a parking ticket for being at an expired metre (literally missed it by like 5 minutes). Picked kids up at school and went out for celebratory lunch. And am now blogging about it. Is anyone interested? Since you asked, Felicity episode was good, I enjoyed it. Not crazy about Noel and Ruby but figure she can’t stick around much longer can she? Have a great rest of day…we are off to see the Incredible Hulk tonight.

Father’s Day

So even though Father’s Day has passed us by, I thought it would be fun to share with you my son Jakob’s Father’s Day card for his dad this year. Let me preface this by saying that Jakob is 6 years old and pretty much has us laughing non-stop.

Dear Daddy,

Knock on wood

The early bird catches the worm

Vacuum

In hot water

No spring chicken

Love Jakob

This has kept us laughing for the last four days…hope it amuses you as well.

Hello world!

Welcome to my blog…I guess the hardest part of starting this up is finding a colour scheme…I figure it will all roll out from there.  I also need to figure out how to set it up and all that other stuff :-)
