Hawthorne

Hawthorne is a new series that premiered this week on TNT, starring Jada Pinkett Smith (as the title character, Christine Hawthorne) and Michael Vartan (Dr Wakefield).  Welcome back Michael (swoon)!  One of my fave tv actors since his fabulous stint as Vaughn on Alias, I am so happy to see him back on tv.  Hawthorne got really good buzz before it started, and I was quite excited to see the premiere.  I watched it last night (it aired on Tuesday) and it was reallly good!  Vartan’s role wasn’t huge in the premiere but hopefully he will be on more in future episodes.  He still looks yummy and his character is adorable…he even eats lollipops – what else do you need?  Jada’s character is super tough, but she was really good and I look forward to seeing her personality developed more.  Jada is the head nurse at the hospital, and Vartan is the head doctor…perhaps a romance is in their future?  I will have to keep watching to see…

Grey’s Anatomy

Grey’s Anatomy is killing it this year!  The first two seasons of Grey’s were fantastic…every episode was just amazing.  And then the third and fourth season happened.  Not so fantastic.  But good enough to keep watching.  So this year, I was thinking that maybe I would watch a few episodes and then if it kept not being fantastic I would just move on to other shows…

This year the show has been steadily improving each episode. I feel like the last three episodes absolutely blew my mind.  Eric Stolz’s story arc was truly outstanding and he deserves an Emmy for that portrayal.  I have never liked Meredith Grey but these last three episodes I thought she was really fantastic.  Cristina always blows me away, and this season is no exception.  I love the new doctor, Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd).  Bailey is, as always, stealing all the scenes.  That woman can act.

The episode that aired on January 22 had me crying for the last 15 minutes.  Jackson almost dying, Izzie finding out she was dying, Meredith crying after the execution, Derek going to get Cristina to comfort Meredith…seriously good drama.  All I can say is that I hope hope hope this season continues at this level…I am really enjoying it, even though I am going through a lot of kleenex.

How I Met Your Mother

I bought my husband some Best Buy gift certificates for presents this holiday season and while I was there I was looking for something to wrap them up with.  I saw they had season 1 and 2 of How I Met Your Mother on sale.  I had read about it alot on Watch With Kristin and Ausiello, and they both seemed to really enjoy it, and frankly I have always been a closet Doogie Howser fan so I figured I would get them.  When my husband opened them he looked at me kind of funny because I know he hates buying tv shows on dvd…he thinks it is a total waste of money.  But I told him they were cheap and supposedly really good so just go with it.

As soon as we started watching the first episode, we knew we would like this show.  Neil Patrick Harris is brilliant as Barney, and definitely makes the show.  He pulls off lines like Suit Up! and Have you met Ted?  like no one else could.  I love him.   When he did karaoke to “Dirty Deeds” we were shocked at how good he sounded.  Is there nothing he can’t do?

The rest of the cast is also amazing…I love every single character, which is rare as usually you find yourself wishing at least one character would just go away.  Not these guys though, I love them all.   Ted, Marshall, Lily and Robin all shine on screen and make me want to find out what will happen to them next.  I am actually at the point where I don’t even care who Ted ends up with, I am enjoying the journey so much.

We are mostly done the first season now and I am just hoping the second season will be as good, and not let us down.  I think they are on season 4 right now, and I am sincerely hoping that it keeps getting renewed.  Where else am I going to learn how to be hip and know what Steak Sauce means?

Funny!!

A friend showed me this and I really giggled – click here.

On another note, Mia Michaels choreographed the most beautiful opening number on So You Think You Can Dance last night – I just love her.  I love her even more for taking the time to come to Canada and work with our dancers as well.  They are soooo lucky!!

Val Emmich

This weekend I was catching up on this season’s episodes of Ugly Betty, and stumbled upon Val Emmich.  He is playing Jesse on the show this season, Betty’s upstairs neighbour.  He is a musician on the show, and in the last episode I watched, The Odd Couple, he performed two songs.  One song, he wrote specifically for the episode.  It was called Snowy Day and it was beautiful.  The other song he performed, Get on with it, was from his new album, Little Daggers.  I really like his voice and his sound, and am happy he is going to be performing again on next week’s episode.  Plus he is a fun character on the show…If you want to read a little more about him you can click here.

Top 5 Favourite TV Women

Okay I spend a lot of time drooling over hot TV men (that top 100 coming soon ;-) ), but I was thinking last night about some of the wonderful female characters that have been on tv over the years.  Lately I find I hate a lot of the female characters on a show because they are so insipid and just plain boring.  But over the years there have been some great ones for me…

5.  Brenda – 90210:  Brenda was the best, bitchiest woman on that show.  She was portrayed beautifully by Shannen Doherty.  Her character was strong and tough and not afraid to fight a few battles for the things she wanted.  She knew when to get off that show and they brought in female after female to try to replace her but never even came close.  Brenda was one of the first characters on tv that I really got invested in.  Loved her!!

4.  Sidney – Alias:  Jennifer Garner’s Sidney Bristow was so kick-ass I wanted to be a spy too.  She was smart and sophisticated and rocked those wigs like no other.  She could take a little torture and still get free to save the world each episode.  Her character was smart, not the typical female role where the male hero comes in to save the day every time.  She could save herself and you know, him too, if he was cute enough.

3.  Blair & Serena – Gossip Girl:  Yes I know I am cheating by listing two at once, but this is my list and my blog so I can do whatever I want.  Blair is so conniving, manipulating and scheming she is a front runner to control the world in a few short years.  She is beautiful, yet tough as nails and bounces back from each set back with a little more evil and glee.  Love her.  Serena is beautiful but smart enough to use it to her advantage against all the other would-be queens in their world.  Her character can stand alone and faces off against powerful business men like her step-father with ease.  So they aren’t very realistic – whatever…love that show!

2. Felicity – Felicity: I just re watched the series this summer and fell in love with Felicity Porter all over again.  She was never afraid to be true to herself in that crazy  college world.  She went from pre-med to art major back to pre-med with ease.  She was strong enough to carry on story lines with two leading male characters, for four whole seasons.  Other girls came and went but that show really was about Felicity.  Keri Russell was brilliant and I miss her!

1.  Veronica – Veronica Mars:  At least once a week I feel sad at the premature cancellation of this brilliant tv show.  Kristen Bell was so truly amazing as Veronica Mars.  That was one sassy, smart girl.  She solved mysteries each week, by herself, always got herself out of her own jams and saved others most of the time too.  She turned bad guys good, and good guys bad.  Her sarcastic commentary was very true to my own heart.  The whole show was amazing but would have been lifeless without Veronica played by Kristen Bell.  I think tv misses her now that she is gone.

Party of Five

Or Pfive or PoF as my friend and I call it.  I just finished watching season 1.  I loved this show when it was on and thought it would be fun to rewatch it.  I have slowly been enjoying season 1…and finished the last episode today.  I know I am a bad person because my favourite character on Pfive other than Charlie (my beloved Matthew Fox) was Griffin.  Since I already watched the show I knew that Griffin arrives on the scene the last ep of season 1, right after his sister Jill dies.  So I basically spent the last half of season 1 saying “Die Jill!  Just die already.  Why are you taking so long to die?  Die!”  These are not charitable thoughts…although she did finally die, and Griffin appeared.  However I had forgotten that they recast the role between season 1 and 2 so I didn’t get to see my Jeremy London.  So sad…

The Unit

I love this show.  It has been off the air for so long due to the writer’s strike and I had completely forgotten how much I LOVE THIS SHOW!!  My Dad also loves this show and happened to be in town the last few days so we watched the season premiere together.  Right from the first scene the action was amazing, and I was sitting on the edge of my seat.  The quality of the actors in this show is terrific, and I am always thrilled to see Noel Crane in army fatigues :-) .  The women had good storylines this week too and I could just feel their pain and outrage and the twist with Mac at the end was crazy – I cannot wait to see next week’s episode.  I sure hope it has another few seasons in it because I would sorely miss this show if it got prematurely cancelled.  If you aren’t watching it yet, give it a try on Sunday nights on CBS.

Fringe

OMG! Love love love!  And more than that, the hubby love love loves too.  This show is awesome!  It is totally a bit too out there and kind of gross sometimes…but really cool and fast paced and well written.  The dialogue is absolutely brilliant.  The characters are so well scripted and we have only seen two episodes.  Anna Torv is so pretty and vulnerable, but smart and tough.  I love the way JJ Abrams creates these incredibly strong intelligent female leads…Joshua Jackson is to die for.  He is so funny in this role and always has the best lines.  His sardonic delivery is amazing, without him I am not sure if the show would be nearly as good.  John Noble is brilliant as Walter Bishop – it must be so hard to play that role…treading the line between genius and insanity.  I even love Kirk Acevedo as Agent Charlie Francis…you just know there is some good back story coming from him in later episodes.  This is the only new show I have bothered to watch so far and am I ever glad I did.  Needless to say it is now on my PVR schedule, and should be on yours too.
